Stage 10 IT

San Martino del Carso/Martinščina–Redipuglia/Redipulja

The second stage dedicated to the Kras and the history of World War I in this area is one of the shortest along the Walk of Peace from the Alps to the Adriatic trail, yet one of the richest in terms of historical evidence.
From San Martino del Carso/Martinščina, gradually descend from the karst plateau and walk along the way where the Italian Army slowly advanced in the opposite direction of yours in the first year of the combats. After about an hour’s walk (follow the CAI 72 first, and later the CAI 77) you come to the area where some phases of the Second and the Third Isonzo Battles took place, and where the remains of the Trincea delle Frasche entrenchment and two monuments, dedicated to the Sassari Brigade and Filippo Corridoni, can be seen now.
After that, continue straight ahead until you reach the road connecting Sagrado/Zagraj and Doberdò del Lago/Doberdob, all along the CAI 77 trail. Since there is no pavement, pay attention to traffic! Turn right, and after a few metres turn left and keep following the CAI 77, now a macadam path running to the settlement Polazzo/Polač. Follow Via Fornaci, then Via della Stazione and after a few minutes you will reach the underpass leading to the state road SR305. Though the path here continues on the left, we do recommend you to turn right and visit the Austro-Hungarian cemetery Fogliano/Foljan.
After your visit to the cemetery, continue along the pavement to the Walk of Peace Visitor Centre Fogliano Redipuglia, which also houses a multimedia museum, and then towards the monument area, where you can visit the Casa Terza Armata Museum, the hill Colle Sant’Elia and the famous Charnel House at Redipuglia/Redipulja with its twenty-two steps that seem to rise towards the sky.
