In 1916, the soldiers of the 2nd Linz regiment built a church in memory of their fallen comrades. The section “Planina Zagreben” took about 1,000 lives. Many of them were killed by enemy fire, while many others died due to the harsh conditions. Avalanches took barracks, paths and lives. After the war, the fallen soldiers were relocated from this cemetery to a bigger cemetery in the village of Soča.
From Bovec head towards the Trenta Valley or the Vršič Pass. When you reach the intersection for Lepena, turn right and continue on this road for 2.5 kilometres. You will see an information board and a bridge on the right side. Park and cross the bridge. After a few minutes of walking you will reach the remains of the church.
