Thanks to its position on a rocky hill above the Soča, the archaeological site of Tonocov grad had been settled for centuries. It lies at the transition from the Friuli lowland to the northern countries. Tonocov grad played the most active role from the 4th through the 6th century A.D. and at the time of peoples’ migrations. Towards the end of the 5th century, a settlement was built on the hill with over twenty houses and several churches. The rich finds rank it among the most important and the best preserved late-Antiquity highland forts in the Eastern Alps.
