The Austro-Hungarian military cemetery is situated at “Srednja vas” as the locals call the central part of the village of Sveto. During World War I, Sveto was a lively settlement in the rear of the front, by the railway in the section between Dutovlje and Kostanjevica. On the fringe of the village there were various magazines, camps and cabin settlements. The Hungarian Red Cross Association organized its field hospital Nr. 1 in the nearby church of St. Aegidius in the summer of 1915, and a cemetery was opened for those who died in the hospital. As early as 1916, as evidenced by the broken stone slab on the monument, the central monument in the form of an obelisk was erected in the cemetery. According to the data of the Kriegsarchiv in Vienna, 1,175 soldiers were buried here.
