The Redemption Column in Gradisca d’Isonzo/Gradišče which is located on the square Piazzale dell’Unità d’Italia represents the four most significant periods of the town’s history: the Turkish invasion, the construction of fortification, the Habsburg era and World War I. The column, which was done by sculptor Battista Novelli, was unveiled in 1924.  On the top of the ten metres high column stands a Venetian Lion of St. Mark with an open book.
