The locals also know this hill as Vrtače. In the Middle Bronze Age, an ancient fort was made on the top of the hill. From the autumn of 1916 to the spring of 1917 (7th–10th Isonzo Battles), the Third Italian Army attempted to conquer Hill 144. It was only conquered by the Italian troops in the Tenth Isonzo Battle (May 12–June 5, 1917). On 23 February 1917, bersagliere Benito Mussolini was severely wounded on the slopes of Arupacupa/Gorjupa kupa.
