The mining settlement Cave del Predil/Rabelj/Raibl lies in the middle of a narrow valley, Val Rio del Lago/Dolina Jezernice, that stretches between Chiusaforte (Kluže, Klausen) and the border with Slovenia and Austria. The place is mainly known for its mining activity which, due to the economic situation in the second half of the 20th century, increasingly stagnated and finally the mine was closed at the end of the century. Resultantly, the number of inhabitants in Cave del Predil and its wider surroundings dramatically declined.
Housed in the building of the former primary school is the History and War Museum of the Julian Alps (Museo storico militare delle Alpi Giulie), which shows the history of the area from the barbarian invasions to World War II. The period of World War I and its immediate aftermath, when the area came under the authority of the Kingdom of Italy, is presented in the rooms “Vittorio Veneto” and “Duca d’Aosta”.
