Gorizia Castle can be seen already from afar when one approaches the city. The castle probably dates back to the 11th century, but in the course of time it has been damaged, destroyed and rebuilt several times. It was shelled during World War I. Today`s appearance is a result of restoration works in 1937 when the castle was restored to its original look. The charming castle has a shape of a pentagon around the Court of the Lanzi from where the 13th century Palazzetto of the Counts can be reached. The castle changed its owners several times (Counts of Gorizia, Advocates of the Church of Aquileia, Habsburgs, Venetians, French). Today the Museum of the Middle Ages is housed in the castle. From the hill above Gorizia/Gorica a splendid view opens over the city and the surroundings of this cross-border area.
