The Cemetery of Heroes is located in the heart of Aquileia, behind the famous Basilica of Santa Maria Assunta. Since the first burials in 1915, the cemetery has retained its original shape. In 1921 a coffin with an unknown soldier was chosen by Maria Bergamas to be transferred to Rome for the Altar of the Fatherland (Altare della Patria).
There are several monuments and statues in the cemetery. Graves are marked with iron crosses decorated with laurel wreaths and oak leaves and bearing the inscription Dulce et decorum est pro Patria mori (It is sweet and honourable to die for the Fatherland).
