During the Austro-Hungarian rule, Trieste/Trst was the main port of the Empire, and in 1751 Empress Maria Theresa granted the Orthodox Greeks (Greeks and Serbs) to build a church to be used for their liturgy. The incompatibility between the two Orthodox components determined the creation of the Eastern Greek Community which in 1784 laid the foundation stone of the sanctuary, dedicated to the Holy Trinity and to San Nicolò (Saint Nicholas). The Eastern Greek Community Museum stands next to the Church of San Nicolò.
