The fort construction began in 1538 as part of strengthening the fortification system at the so-called “harbour mouth” of the Venetian lagoon. Within the French defence plan, works for improvement and upgrading were done on the fort in 1806. From 1831 to 1848, it underwent some maintenance works, mainly the regulation of the embankments. In 1856, furnaces were built to heat the artillery shells red-hot. During World War I, the fort accommodated artillery positions for anti-aircraft and anti-torpedo defence. In modern times, it was garrisoned by the Italian Navy and later abandoned. The site is now the subject of initiatives aiming to increase its public valorisation.
