On 24 October 1917, following the final offensive, the fighting on the Isonzo Front came to an end. During its 29 months, the front had brought immeasurable suffering and devastation to our region. A year later, on 11 November 1918, the First World War also came to an end.
Some of you have already commemorated the victims of war on the anniversary of the start of the Twelfth Isonzo Battle and on All Souls’ Day, sharing photographs from various memorials with us. We invite everyone else to join our “Light a Candle for Peace” initiative on 11 November and honour the fallen by symbolically lighting a candle at remembrance sites along the former First World War front lines, which are now being connected through the European Walk of Peace 14–18.
We would also like to remind you that candles can be more sustainable too – made of wood or drawn on a stone. You can also pay your respects with flowers or in any other way.
Through this shared gesture, we preserve the memory of the past and remind ourselves of the precious value of peace. At a time when news of wars constantly reminds us that peace can never be taken for granted, the message of this initiative is more important than ever.
Let the Light for Peace be more than a one-off symbolic gesture marking the anniversary of the end of the First World War. Let us build peace in our own communities every day – through understanding, compassion, kindness and mutual respect.
We invite you to share with us a photograph of a cemetery, monument or another memorial site dedicated to those who fell in the First World War that you have visited. You can send your photograph to our email address at info@potmiru.si or tag us in your social media post.
