On 7 June 1917, the British detonated 19 mines under the German lines at Messines Ridge, creating massive explosions felt even in England. Traces of these craters remain today, with the Spanbroekmolen crater – a former German stronghold – being the most famous. West Flanders preserves and maintains the site. A surrounding path allows observation and offers a panoramic view. Landmarks like the Pool of Peace and Kruisstraat help visualize the battlefield, including the no man’s land. In Flanders Fields Museum is in charge of the promotion.
