During the First World War, in September 1916 the officers and soldiers of the Fifth Border Group were under fire. They did not give up and even counterattack, they withheld the post until the arrival of the regular armed forces. As a result of the shelling, many soldiers gave their lives to the Motherland.
The Monument of the Border Guard was created in 1918 on the territory of the Sea Garden in the City of Varna. For more than 25 years it has been a favourite place for the cityʼs inhabitants and one of the most visited places. The monument was built in the memory of the dead officers, sergeants and soldiers of the 15th Border Brigade of Varna Eighth Infantry Regiment. The monument is located in the seaside part of the Sea Garden. It is close to the Museum of Natural History, which building has been used during the WW1 by border guards for border posts.
On the three sides of the Monument there are slabs showing the names of those killed in the battle. On the back of the sculpture of one of the marble slabs are shown the places where the border guards have died.
The sculptural composition is also known as “The Border Guard with a Dog”.
