Mine Crater Sint-Elooi

World War I Remains

On 7 June 1917, the British detonated 19 mines under the German lines at Messines Ridge, creating explosions felt even in England. Today, the Sint-Elooi site features craters and a WW1 Allied machine gun post. Historically significant for battles in the Ypres Salient, the site also includes a preserved 1917 British bunker and showcases the evolution of underground warfare.
The City of Ypres maintains the grounds, thanks to an agreement with the private owner, with In Flanders Fields Museum promotional effort.
