Menin Gate Memorial to the Missing

Monument/Memorial

The Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial commemorates over 54,000 missing soldiers. Chosen for its historical significance as a gateway to battlefields, it’s a poignant symbol of loss. The daily Last Post ceremony, held since 1928 (excluding WW2 occupation), further cements its importance. Maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC), the Menin Gate has been meticulously cared for since its 1927 inauguration. Major renovations, underway from 2023–2026, will restore the monument to its full glory for its centenary.
Local and regional organizations, including the Ypres tourist office (Last Post communications) and Westtoer (tourism promotion), play supporting roles in the promotion of the monument.
