The Mausoleum of the Heroes of Mărășești is one of Europeʼs most important WW1 monuments, built in memory of the Romanian soldiers who fell during the Battle of Mărășești (July–August 1917). Despite being outnumbered, Romanian forces halted the German offensive, stabilizing the front until the war’s end. The battle claimed over 21,000 Romanian lives, including 480 officers.
Construction of the mausoleum began in 1924 and was completed in 1938, based on the plans of architects George Cristinel and Constantin Pomponiu. Shaped like a stepped pyramid with a turret-like dome, it holds 5,073 soldiers in 163 crypts. The Dome of Glory is adorned with a stone frieze depicting battle scenes, sculpted by Ion Jalea and Corneliu Medrea.
Next to the mausoleum stands a museum (built in 1987), showcasing documents, weapons, uniforms, and personal items related to the battle and figures such as Ecaterina Teodoroiu and General Eremia Grigorescu.
