German Military Cemetery Langemark

Military Cemetery

The Langemark German Cemetery, originally a British burial plot (1914), became a major German war cemetery in the 1920s, consolidating remains from other local cemeteries. Developed in the 1930s, it commemorates over 44,000 German soldiers. A striking rectangular entrance leads to the “Alter Friedhof”, the oldest section, containing over 10,100 fallen, including over 6,300 identified. The central comrades’ grave holds nearly 25,000 unidentified soldiers, surrounded by blocks listing nearly 17,000 others confirmed to be within. The northern section holds over 9,000 more identified soldiers. A sculpture by Emil Krieger depicting four grieving soldiers stands at the rear.
The Ypres tourist office manages communications for commemorative sites in the area, and the Langemark tourist office is strongly committed to promote this connection for touristic and commemorative means.
