The Military History Museum  (Museo storico militare) in Palmanova was established by the Ministry of Defence in 1990. World War I is not the sole theme of the museum; it also presents the history of this fortified town, considered a pearl of military architecture from 1593 to the present day. The museum has three sites: the palace of the military governor (Palazzo del Governatore delle Armi), the outer part with fortified walls and the Cividale Gate (Porta Cividale).

In the tower above the Cividale Gate there are the inner rooms of the museum, where historical items, weapons, uniforms and documents related to the military history of Palmanova are displayed. Presented are the periods of the Venetian Republic (1593‒1797), the French and Austrian domination, and the Italian period from 1866 onwards. One part is also dedicated to World War I until October 1917, when Palmanova had military hospitals, warehouses and a military-training ground.
