Szeged First World War Heritage Tour

The Szeged First World War Heritage Tour is an interactive self-guided walking/tram route that connects key World War I memorials and historic sites across Szeged. Along the route, visitors can explore how the war shaped the cityʼs buildings, institutions, and everyday life through a combination of historical photographs, present-day images, audio narration and short quizzes.

Rather than simply reading information panels, participants experience the cityʼs wartime history at each stop. The route follows locations that are conveniently situated along Szegedʼs tram network, making it easy to discover the sites on foot or by tram. At each stop, you can view historical and present-day photographs side by side, listen to audio stories in your preferred language, and reinforce your knowledge with short quizzes. QR codes are also available at every station, allowing you to access the related content instantly while visiting the site. Content is available in five languages (Hungarian, English, Italian, Romanian and Serbian), making it accessible to both local and international audiences.

Highlights of the route include significant World War I heritage sites such as the Heroesʼ Gate, erected to commemorate the cityʼs fallen soldiers, and former barracks of the Imperial and Royal Szeged 46th Infantry Regiment, which played an important role in mobilizing troops during the war.

The tour offers an engaging way to discover how World War I left lasting marks on Szeged’s urban landscape and collective memory while exploring the city on foot.
