Jan Kojan and a several other people from Kojakovice fought on the different fronts during World War I. Some of the villagers also fought in the so-called Czech Legion, which was fighting on the side of the allied forces.
Upon his return, village people asked/agreed that Jan Kojan should make a sculpture in memory of the soldiers from the village fallen during WW1. The sculputere is unique and only one of three sculptures the now famous Czech painter ever made.
