During World War I, Mt. San Michele was one of the key points in the defence of Gorizia/Gorica. The Austro-Hungarian Army built an extensive network of caves and shelters here which were equipped with large calibre guns. After several months of warfare, the Italian Army managed to conquer the hill in the Sixth Isonzo Battle. Today, it is possible to take a walk around the renovated caves and shelters and have a look at the World War I Museum “Museo del San Michele” which offers a unique experience with its interactive multimedia content.
Besides the museum, there is also a Walk of Peace Information Centre, IAT Monte San Michele.
