World War I military cemetery is situated to the northwest of the village of Gorjansko, close to the civil cemetery. Buried in the cemetery are the Austro-Hungarian soldiers who died in the nearby hospital. The monumental portion of the cemetery was completed already during the War, in July 1916. The cemetery has preserved its original appearance, except that the former three-block stone crosses and marble plates with names on the collective graves are no more to be found. According to the data of the Italian authorities that managed in the 1930s the disinterring of their soldiers buried in military cemeteries, 6,015 soldiers are buried here. The military cemetery of Gorjansko is the biggest Austro-Hungarian cemetery of World War I on the Slovenian territory. It has been very well preserved.
During the Isonzo Front it was exactly on the Kras that most of the military operations took place, which consequently brought a great number of fatalities. Numerous Austro-Hungarian military cemeteries have been preserved, e.g. in the surroundings of the village of Brje where as many as four such cemeteries can be found, then a well preserved cemetery at Dutovlje, etc.
