I soldati austro-ungarici cercavano riparo ovunque, anche sotto la terra. Trasformarono cos\u00ec numerose grotte naturali carsiche in depositi e luoghi di rifornimento. Avevano un reparto particolare del genio, guidato dallo <strong>speleologo Alois Peter Bock<\/strong>. Nella <strong>Grotta <em>Krompirjeva jama\/Kartoffelh\u00f6hle<\/em> <\/strong>(Grotta delle patate), che raggiungevano scendendo un pozzetto per una scala chiodata, i soldati organizzarono gli spazi <strong>per conservare i prodotti e le patate<\/strong>; da qui il nome della grotta. In seguito vi venne realizzata una nuova entrata, che si utilizza ancora oggi. <strong>Nei mesi invernali tra il 1916 ed il 1917<\/strong> <strong>qui vennero sistemati fino a 500 soldati e 8 ufficiali.<\/strong> All\u2019interno c\u2019erano dei <strong>letti a pi\u00f9 piani<\/strong> e delle cabine di legno per gli ufficiali.
