Si narra che il primo santuario cristiano sia stato eretto sulla sommit\u00e0 della collina gi\u00e0 nel periodo romano. La chiesa \u00e8 stata pi\u00f9 volte ristrutturata e ricostruita. Fu colpita da incendi (XV secolo), saccheggiata dai soldati francesi (1797) e danneggiata dai tedeschi durante i bombardamenti della Seconda guerra mondiale. A causa delle invasioni turche, il santuario e il monastero furono circondati da mura, che si sono conservate fino a oggi.<br \/>\nIl monastero appartiene ai <strong>francescani<\/strong>. Castelmonte \u00e8 compreso nel percorso che mette in relazione tre chiese, che i pellegrini possono visitare a piedi, in bicicletta o in auto. Oltre a Castelmonte, il percorso comprende la chiesa di Sveta Gora sopra Nova Gorica e Marijino Celje a Lig.
