Molto probabilmente fu costruito nel <strong>XI secolo,<\/strong> ma venne pi\u00f9 volte danneggiato, distrutto e ricostruito. L\u2019aspetto attuale del castello \u00e8 dovuto ai lavori di restauro, avvenuti nel 1937, quando venne ripristinato l\u2019aspetto originale.<br \/>\nL\u2019affascinante castello fu costruito a forma di pentagono attorno al <strong>Cortile dei Lanzi<\/strong>, da qui si arriva al <strong>Palazzetto dei Conti<\/strong> del XIII secolo. I proprietari del castello cambiarono frequentemente (<strong>i Conti di Gorizia, gli Avvocati della Chiesa di Aquileia, gli Asburgo, i veneti, i francesi<\/strong>).
